The wading pool in the city park.

Anyone who has gone to a public pool in Hamburg with young children knows: Swimming in this city can become expensive. However, there's also a free option, completely without long lines at the entrance: in the wading pool at the city park. Whether small or big, there's only one rule here: getting wet is what matters! The oval pool with an adjacent playground and café is a paradise for families and a unique destination for everyone.

The bathing fun in the park in the Winterhude district of the city is almost as old as the park itself. Already in the early 1920s, a shallow clay pool with a sandy beach was inaugurated. Old black and white photographs show: much hasn't changed since then, at least on the surface. Even back then, there were linden trees lining the circular path, the pool was always large and round. Only technically there were occasional updates. Most recently, the bathing area was renovated in 2014, for the 100th anniversary of the city park. Specially designed inflow nozzles, large drains, and new pipes have been ensuring that the water is always fresh since then.

The historical wading pool is no longer a secret tip, of course. On the weekends, it can get quite crowded as a result. For those who don't want to waste their time searching for a parking spot, using sharing services is the best option. The nearest hvv switch point is only a 10-minute walk away: Kapstadtring Nord, Kapstadtring 8, 22297 Hamburg.
